The Story

Off season (June-October) in Goa, India, is very hard on the local animals, because there is not enough leftover food going around. During season, the tourists & snow bird locals move in and assist with adoptions, feeding, vaccinations, and keeping the birth rate down on the cats and dogs.

The two puppies in the profile picture were so starved when I first found them crossing a busy street. After a week of caring for them, someone had kicked the white/ginger pup in the face and dislocated his jaw!I couldn't stop crying because he could barely eat and his little sister was even whining. His jaw went back thankfully 4 days later...

Ever since then, is when I wanted to make a difference in these animals lives. Even if it is for a short amount of time for them to have happiness. Animals feel emotion and intelligence just as much as humans do, if not more! The dogs here are highly intelligent and very easy to train, so it is quite easy to find them homes. Neutering and spaying is a free service for ALL street animals.

There are fewer cats than dogs here...occasionally you find a litter, but people will keep 1-2 cats and throw the rest of the litter on the side of a road, so we will find them peeking out of the bushes and leave food for them until they gain our trust.)

This fundraising is 100% to the purchase of dried food, chicken, rice, vegetables, coconut, soy, turmeric (anti-inflammatory), for the making of their dinner plates. We drive around every night and find the starving packs of dogs and puppies. Each week we discover a new area of dogs that have been going without eating proper nutrition. They eat scraps, bones, bugs, anything they find. They fatten up quickly with the food we cook them. We also add dried dog food to the top so they are getting a mix. (Cats we give fish and dried). Food prep takes about 2 hours a day for 20 dogs.

In the United States, there are so many more centers and acute awareness on the proper care for animals. Where I am currently placed in India, many want a pedigree and then they don't want to care for the dog because its "too much work." These individuals keep the dog on a short chain for 12 hours and then get angry at them when they pee in that space. These kinds of owners will release their dogs only after 10pm at night, making them more susceptible to being hit by cars and attacked by other packs of animals. When they get tired of having the animal around, he/she gets dropped off in a field or on someones doorstep.

Once I started working with the street dogs, I found that the locals only want to have one or two dogs and that many are freighted of dogs because they think they are going to attack them. This is because many of the men and boys throw rocks and beat them with sticks!

I have run off many of men who come at the dogs who live on the beach. These dogs are extremely friendly and harmless to people. But hate and fear seems to control some, and they feel they have to attack before they get magically attacked by a dog that would rather give you a wet kiss.

I rescued a 6 month puppy last week who was hit by a car, whose leg, we thought was at first broken. She had snuck into a families back yard for protection from the other dogs. The old lady wanted the dog gone and said they would continue to throw rocks at the puppy! I had to walk past an angry fenced in guard dog, where the puppy was hidden under some branches under the porch. She couldn't even try to stand up because she was so weak. Now she is recovering in a safe home.
